Cephalexin goes by the brand name Keflex and comes in 250mg, and 500mg capsules as well as oral suspension.

Cephalexin is a first generation Cephalosporin which was an improvement over the original penicillin. This first generation drug is effective against most Gram positive infections as well as some Gram negative infections.

It also is able to stand up to anti-penicillin enzymes which come from Staphylococci.

Cephalexin is useful to treat common and uncomplicated infections for the most part. It is also very useful against Staphylococcal infections, skin infections.

It is used usually in dosages which last about 6 to 8 weeks to treat deep skin infections.

Side effects for Cephalexin include nausea. It is recommended that to avoid nausea, give your pets food with the medication.

Cats may develop fever from Cephalexin and dogs may develop hyper excitability as well as drooling as a result of taking Cephalexin.

Cephalexin may be used with other antibiotics to cover a wide range of bacteria when it is not known what type of specific infection is present.

The medication is usually used for many months and is safe for long term use.

It should not be used in pregnant pets and should be refrigerated at all times.
